YAMAHA 115HP

Ask most transoms what they would like and the answer is a 115HP. The Yamaha 115HP is a 1832 cc, 16-valve DOHC in-line four that folds Electronic Fuel Injection, variable trolling control and Y-COP security into a package light and compact enough to be genuinely welcome.

Right-sized on purpose

There is nothing exotic about the 1832 cc, 16-valve DOHC in-line four — and that is rather the point. Electronic Fuel Injection keeps the mixture right whatever the day is doing, wet-sump lubrication keeps the plumbing straightforward, and a 10.0 : 1 compression ratio makes modest displacement feel immediate, from a 700–800 r/min idle right through to the top of the range.

Electrically it holds a reserve you rarely have to think about: a three-phase 35 A alternator, 27 A of it given over to battery charging, so instruments, lights and the starter motor can share a long afternoon of low revs without the day ending flat. Y-COP immobilises the engine from a key fob when you walk away, the tilt limiter stands between cowling and transom, and the front-mounted flushing port makes rinsing out the salt the last easy job of the day.

SERENITY

Slow water, fine adjustments

Fine control is what makes slow days bearable. Variable trolling control moves engine speed in 50 rpm increments, which turns holding a pace into a setting rather than a skill. PTT variable-position shallow water drive gets the leg clear when the sand comes up to meet you, F-N-R shifts stay crisp behind a 2.15 (28/13) gear ratio, and 35 degrees of steering each direction gives a tight harbour more room than it appears to have.

DESIGN

ENGINE

Nothing here is oversized. At 524 mm across and 175–185 kg dry, the 115HP sits on an existing transom without upsetting the boat’s balance — which is exactly why swapping an older engine for one stops being a project. Behind the sleek cowling, 84.6 kW reaches the propeller shaft across a 5300–6300 r/min full throttle range: unremarkable on paper, genuinely quick on the water.
