YAMAHA 200HP V6

Same block, same rigging, lower output — and for a great many working boats, exactly the right amount of engine. The Yamaha 200HP V6 puts 147.1 kW at the propeller shaft, with electronic fuel injection metering the fuel and a 70 A alternator holding up the electronics through long, unremarkable days.

200HP V6

Like clockwork, but wetter

Cold morning, early start, and the only real decision is whether you grabbed a second sweater. The 200HP V6 fires up cleanly and goes straight into work, 147.1 kW of maximum propeller shaft output on tap for running supplies, carrying passengers, or covering whatever gets added once the schedule is already set. This is proven Yamaha V6 engineering doing what it does best: working hard, running clean and refusing to make a fuss about it.

The 200’s helm asks very little of you. Electronic fuel injection delivers exactly what is needed, exactly when it is needed, so starts stay quick and throttle response stays crisp on the fiftieth run of the day as readily as the first. Digital electronic control takes the resistance out of shifting — lighter, quicker and far less tiring by the end of a long stint at the wheel — and the optional CL5 colour display keeps engine data one glance away: one eye on the numbers, the other on the job. Alongside, a 650–750 r/min idle keeps slow manoeuvring measured, and coming off it is immediate.

SERENITY

Fits the boat, fits the fleet

Every figure that decides whether an engine fits is identical to the 250HP V6’s: 958 mm long, 634 mm wide, X: 643 mm or U: 770 mm at the transom, 32 degrees of steering each direction, 267 – 274 kg dry. So the difference between them is output, not rigging — the same mounts, the same control options, the same 6.3 L/ 6.0 L oil service with or without a filter change. Run both in one fleet and the maintenance routine barely changes; run the 200 on its own and nothing else has to be given up in exchange for power the boat was never going to use.

DESIGN

ENGINE

Mechanically it is about as unfussy as a V6 gets: a square 96.0 × 96.0 mm bore and stroke, four valves per cylinder over twin overhead cams, TCI ignition and a wet sump, all on Yamaha’s robust 4.2 litre platform. A 2.00 (26/13) gear ratio turns 147.1 kW into usable thrust, and the working band covers the whole day — 650–750 r/min at idle for manoeuvring alongside, 5000–6000 r/min when the run is long and the water is open.
