40HP
Enough Push For A Loaded RIB
The 40HP takes Yamaha’s four-stroke know-how and puts it into an SOHC in-line three that pulls harder than the badge implies. Multi-point fuel injection times each cylinder’s charge individually, so starting is instant on the coldest morning and the mid-range keeps pulling cleanly through a 5000 – 6000 r/min full-throttle band. With 29.4 kW at the propeller shaft, tenders, RIBs and day boats all move with easy authority.
Control is what turns that into a useful day. Variable trolling RPM steps the engine in neat 50 RPM increments for lure-perfect pace, while a 2.0 (26/13) gear ratio and F-N-R shift keep low-speed manoeuvres deliberate. Shallow water drive lifts the leg for beach launches, a 17 A alternator (13 A battery charging) keeps the electronics fed, and 40 degrees of steering each way makes a tight marina feel roomier than it is.

SERENITY
Happy Barely Moving
Wet-sump lubrication, a 9.4 : 1 compression ratio and an idle that settles between 750 – 850 r/min keep the 40HP unbothered when you are hardly moving at all. The digital network gauges are worth wiring in — speed, trim, hours and fuel economy all stop being estimates. And Yamaha’s clean-burn four-stroke design leaves the air behind you as pleasant as the water ahead, dawn launch to dusk drift.
DESIGN
ENGINE
The proportions are the point. A 384 mm overall width and a dry weight spanning 94 kg – 106 kg let the 40HP sit lightly on a small transom without loading the stern, in short (414 mm) or long (536 mm) shaft. Bore and stroke of 65.0 × 75.0 mm give the in-line three its smooth, low-vibration character.
