YAMAHA 50HP

996 cc, four cylinders, a long stroke and fuel injection: the Yamaha 50HP is generous through the mid-range and clean enough on fuel that a full day of tow ropes and slow drifts stops being a budgeting decision.

50HP

The mid-range does the towing

The 50HP runs a SOHC L4 — eight valves, 996 cc, and a 65.0 × 75.0 mm bore and stroke that deliberately favours mid-range torque over headline revs. That is the pull that lifts a wakeboarder out of the water, holds a plane once you are there, and eases you off a busy slipway without a fuss, while fuel injection keeps the response crisp and unfussy at every point in between.

There is 36.8 kW at the propeller shaft to work with, spread across a full-throttle range of 5000 – 6000 r/min and geared 1.85 (24/13) for clean acceleration under load. Wide Range Power Trim & Tilt puts the leg exactly where the hull wants it, PrimeStart™ ignition means the first turn of a cold morning does the job, and straightforward F-N-R shifting keeps close-quarters work calm — with idle settled at 700 – 800 r/min.

SERENITY

Fifty RPM at a time

Variable trolling RPM control shifts your pace in 50-RPM steps, so a drift past a mark or a lure’s path over structure becomes a decision rather than an estimate. Shallow water drive offers variable positions on both the PTT and hydro versions, and 40 degrees of steering each side keeps close-quarters turns tidy. The digital network gauges gather speed, trim, hours and economy onto one face, which is one fewer thing to work out mid-manoeuvre.

DESIGN

ENGINE

The compact shape and solid one-piece top cowling do the quiet work — everything sealed in, noise and clutter cut back, the transom left looking finished. At 111 kg – 119 kg dry, 384 mm across and offered in 527 mm (L) and 641 mm (X) transom heights, it adds little enough at the stern to leave trim and turn-in honest.
